Background

Private Internal Podcasting (PIP) is the most secure way to distribute podcasts to employees, patrons, and private groups. Blubrry podcasting uses every safety precaution to keep it safe from hackers and can only be listened to by users the podcaster permits to access. This gives companies an easy way to integrate short- and long-form messages to their employees and partners worldwide. This innovative use for podcasting needed a logo and app for its secure user experience.

Goal

Create a logo and branding for a secure podcasting app that integrates with Blubrry’s family of products.

Exploration

I was given early ideations for the app and case studies from the Development team. This gave me inspiration for the logo design. I gravitated toward locks and shields to convey the high-security Blubrry was proud of integrating for PIP. We also benchmarked other podcasting apps to see how ours would differ with its privatization of content.

Experimentation

I began brainstorming logo sketches for PIP while working with development on the wireframes of the app and website for managing listeners. We presented our early versions to Blubrry and received feedback:

  • Blubrry liked the lock direction because the shield felt more like defense or protection instead of private and secure.

  • Even though it’s private we still wanted to visualize podcasters and listeners in our marketing.

Execution

Now that Blubrry had confirmed all the features they wanted to include in the app we were able to simplify the user experience. I refined the management system that the podcaster would use along with the app that would display their podcasts and integrated the podcaster’s branding elements. I also developed graphics for marketing online and at b2b conferences. Once everything was finalized, we were ready to launch the app on Apple and Google app stores.

Evaluation

I’ve created logos and branding for years but this was the first time creating one for a security-focused product. The look, tone, and feel of this user demographic were new for me to conceptualize. Working with Blubrry to create this new product taught me how to visualize innovative ideas that may not exist yet. PIP was well received by the podcasting community and has ignited discussion about secure communications and podcasting for businesses.
