Background
PowerPress is the #1 podcast plugin on WordPress. It provides a low entry barrier to WP users to begin podcasting for free. It is provided by Blubrry Podcasting, which wanted to update the logo and branding of their product. This new branding would be part of a marketing initiative including a new site and video to raise brand awareness for both PowerPress and Blubrry.
Goal
Create a new logo that celebrates the plugin’s success and its integration with Blubrry.
Exploration
To create a new logo for PowerPress, I worked closely with Blubrry’s Creative Director and marketing team. I learned about the plugin and its capabilities. This helped kick off my creative process and I began searching for inspiration for the new logo.
Experimentation
I transferred my early sketches into icons. An icon needs to be eye-catching and give enough insight into the product on its own. Icons are flexible marks that can be used for badges, stickers, and app symbols. Some feedback I got from Blubrry:
Blubrry favored logos that integrated their berry icon.
PowerPress was considered the “secret sauce” of Blubrry since it’s free and introduces the company to WordPress users.
Using Blubrry’s color palette was preferred so it integrates easier into their suite of products.
With this feedback, I narrowed my logo design options and gained a better understanding of the overall branding. Now I could begin working on the storyboard for the promotional video.
Execution
After several rounds of refinement of the logo and the storyboard, I began finalizing the design and producing branding materials for PowerPress. New graphics were needed for the site and WordPress plugin store. Blubrry chose the icon with the plug and berry connected as this visually shows the integration provided by their company. This connection was taken further with the video, showing podcasters and listeners in the berry icon. The storyboard was sent to a video production company for development.
Evaluation
The marketing team was thrilled with the positive feedback we received from events. Engaging with a new podcaster and the popularity of our swag gave Blubrry a reintroduction into the podcasting community. This was my first time creating an exhibition design but my skills in branding extension integrated with this project. Meeting and discussing a new podcaster gave me insights that I was able to bring to Blubrry to elevate their messaging even further.
