Background

This is a digital production of Baltimore Magazine’s story about the fishermen of the city’s most delicious resource: crab. This story spotlights the balance of the crab’s growing popularity and its dwindling population. I transformed the printed version of the story into an immersive online experience with mouth-watering photos and videos.

Goal

Captivate audiences with the online version of this story using visuals and video elements.

Exploration

We created a team with the editor, Art Director, and Digital manager to discuss the possibilities and gather assets for the online version of the story. I read the printed story and began building a wireframe using the storyline as a guide.

Experimentation

I started developing the wireframe with the visuals and videos given by the photographer. I adjusted the structure based on feedback from the editor and Art Director. With their help, I was able to enhance the flow of the storyline by balancing the imagery and text.

Execution

I began refining the overall design of the story with smaller details and stylized text. I also coded an opening video for an impactful first impression, putting the viewer right in the moment these crab fishermen experience every day.

Evaluation

“Aaron, THANK YOU. I know this is a beast. And such a fast turnaround – you are amazing. Love all the layers to this. It’s going to sing.” - Lydia Woolever, editor
The story was a highlight of Baltimore’s online content. The digital design is nominated for the City & Regional Magazine Awards. My experience with integrating digital elements and online storytelling evolved the original story into a memorable online journey.
